"Florida Retrospective" Photography Exhibit

Florida – to many people – conjures up beautiful clear water, sandy beaches, sunshine, and miles of blue skies. Those sensory memories – and more – will be celebrated as a dozen Florida photographers exhibit their works in a new exhibition called "Florida Retrospective." The exhibit opens January 8 from 6 pm to 7:15 pm in the Rose Room Gallery of the Peabody Auditorium (Daytona Beach) and runs through Thursday, February 25. The exhibit is free and open to the public.

The photography covers the beauty of Florida's beaches, birds, and natural habitats, but takes a sharp turn at one the end of the gallery. There viewers will find dozens of journalistic photographs the subject of which is "Unique Florida." From the 'kitsch' of the Barberville tin chickens and a floating snack shack, there are also photos of migrant workers, cowboys on bucking broncos, rocket ships, failing buildings, and water, water, water – intermingled with Florida's birds and animals.

Mary McBride curated 58 works into the juried show from the portfolios of twelve photographers. "Clearly, she says, "the high quality of the work submitted could have filled several exhibitions."

Exhibiting photographers include Larry Barenbaum, Kevin Boldenow, Charlene Edwards, Pat Gilmer, Karen Kershaw, Lola Lawrence, Diane Miller, Steffen Mittelhaeuser, Harry Moulis, Kathleen Rasche, Marlene Rimensberger, and Alison Thomas.
